I have been experimenting with abstracted landscapes, taking natural forms and putting them together almost like a puzzle. It is really an interesting extension of my landscapes and farm scenes. It feels like creating poetry rather than telling a story. It makes my mind work in a new way. I have gotten positive responses from friends and clients, so I am going to keep working!

I tried to create layers of texture and color, almost quilt-like. The sky has a lot of waves of impasto, and I was very happy with how the land just floats and continues into the sky.

I have been doing a lot of paintings lately in a long, narrow format. This is one of the larger ones and I was really please with the drama this size creates. The long vistas of flat, farmland, really inspire my landscapes.

This was a lot of fun. I love the shape of sheep and this guy looks like one of the puffy clouds in the background. The painting has a lot of thick impasto and it was all done with a palette knife, which creates a lot of spontaneity.

This is the second in a series of cloud paintings I just finished. I wanted the sky to dominate. The next painting coming soon is a larger 24x24 piece that is very dramatic. It is still drying in my studio.

I have been experimenting with clouds. Big rolling clouds. I have two others in this set that I will post soon. I was pleased with the colors of this one, esp. the teal/aqua sky.

Chickens! So much pride and personality!  There is a lot of impasto paint on this one, using mainly a palette knife. I really enjoyed creating the textured ground with so much rich color.

The Gift to be Simple II

My paintings are a kind of Contemporary Americana, celebrating the rural landscape. The title of this piece comes from a Shaker melody: 

"'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight."

This is a larger version of a painting I did a few months ago, which was very popular and was sold by Serena & Lily Bazaar. The title comes from a piece of Aaron Copland's Tender Land opera. It is a simple image, but is painted in thick impasto with a lot of great texture. I always paint the edges, so it can be hung with or without a frame.
