New Painting Coming to Serena & Lily

Blue and Grey Harmony

This is a new 24" x 24" painting on Serena & Lily. Blue and Grey Harmony. I like playing with the balance of grey shades with the brighter oranges, reds, and blues.

Since February of 2014, I have been showing my larger paintings on Serena & Lily's Art collection site. They are a wonderful home decor company out of Sausalito, California.

While I still show my smaller paintings, up to 12"x12", on Etsy, along with some of my older work, I have really enjoyed the relationship with Serena & Lily and their professional site which reaches a whole new audience for me.

Appearance on NBC!

One of my paintings, The Heart of the Matter, 8"x10", will be featured on the set of an upcoming series on NBC: Odyssey. I am so excited! I will post an announcement once I know a premiere date.

I was interested in the texture of this old farmhouse, and improvised the landscape. I think the sheep add a lot of personality to the scene.

This one has a lot of thick impasto. I think the yellow sky really balances the composition.

I have been experimenting with clouds. Big rolling clouds. I have two others in this set that I will post soon. I was pleased with the colors of this one, esp. the teal/aqua sky.

Chickens! So much pride and personality!  There is a lot of impasto paint on this one, using mainly a palette knife. I really enjoyed creating the textured ground with so much rich color.

I was really experimenting with this one. I love the long, narrow, shape. It makes the scene more dramatic.

This was just a fun exercise with color! I wanted the blues and greens of the birds to really pop! The orange isn't quite as bright as the top photo shows.

This is the second of a pair I painted last week. I am playing with the texture of the paint and trying to simplify shapes and color.

My paintings are a kind of Contemporary Americana, celebrating the rural landscape. The title of this piece comes from a Shaker melody: 

"'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight."

This is painted with a palette knife with thick impasto and lots of bright colors. I love the long narrow size and am planning to do more!

This is a larger version of a painting I did a few months ago, which was very popular and was sold by Serena & Lily Bazaar. The title comes from a piece of Aaron Copland's Tender Land opera. It is a simple image, but is painted in thick impasto with a lot of great texture. I always paint the edges, so it can be hung with or without a frame.
